State lawmakers gathered in Springfield last week for the first two days of the annual fall Veto Session. During the 2025 spring session, a total of 436 bills were passed by both chambers of the General Assembly and sent to the Governor for final action. Out of these, four bills were vetoed: two received total vetoes, one was subject to a reduction veto, and another was amended through an amendatory veto.
No decisions were made on any of the vetoed legislation during the initial days of the session. Lawmakers are scheduled to return to the Capitol on October 28, providing another opportunity to consider new legislation or revisit previously introduced bills.
One of the key issues under consideration is a set of proposals linked to the Majority Party’s tax and spending plans. These include the Transit Bill, which has drawn attention for proposing a billion-dollar financial package for Mayor Brandon Johnson. The bill would transfer control of the regional transit board to Chicago and require suburban taxpayers to cover much of the cost. Lawmakers may also debate a proposed $1.50 delivery tax on most packages delivered to homes across Illinois.
The second week of the fall Veto Session will take place from October 28 through October 30.
Arellano, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2025 to represent the state's 37th Senate District, replacing previous state senator Win Stoller.
