The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has launched a new initiative aimed at attracting and retaining civil engineering talent in the state. The Intern to Hire program creates a pathway for college students studying civil engineering to move from internships into full-time employment with IDOT.
Under the program, college interns who complete between six months and five years of internship experience with IDOT can transition directly into full-time roles as civil engineer trainees after graduation. To be eligible, candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college.
Currently, more than 1,000 civil engineers work for IDOT. The agency highlights that new engineers will have opportunities to contribute to transportation and infrastructure projects across Illinois, which is considered a major transportation hub in the United States.
IDOT also offers a rotation program that allows new engineers to gain experience in various areas such as design, construction, project management, and materials testing. This approach aims to provide well-rounded professional development.
There are currently 63 open positions for civil engineers throughout Illinois. The department plans to expand the program in the future to include additional disciplines.

McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
