Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) responded to recent developments in the U.S. Senate, where lawmakers reached an agreement to reopen the federal government after a period of stalemate.

In a statement, Chesney said, “I am pleased to know that a handful of Democrats have finally come to their senses and are joining Republicans in approving a clean continuing resolution that reopens the federal government. What comes as no surprise, however, is that their change-of-heart came less than a week after an election, proving that their opposition was never about policy; it was about politics."

Chesney also expressed his support for Republican efforts in Congress: “I stand with our Republican delegation in Washington who are committed to putting an end to Biden-era policies that provide for illegal immigrant healthcare, and I look forward to the resolution making it’s way to the desk of President Donald Trump for his signature.”

Chesney has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 2023, representing the 45th District after succeeding Brian Stewart.
