Veterans Day, observed on November 11, commemorates the service and sacrifice of U.S. military veterans. The holiday marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918 and now honors all who have served in subsequent conflicts, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and more recent engagements.
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie reflected on her upbringing as an "Army brat," which instilled in her a strong respect for those in uniform and their families. “We are blessed in the General Assembly to serve with many veterans who continue to lead with integrity and purpose long after their military careers,” said McCombie.
The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs provides important services to veterans and their families throughout Illinois. In recognition of Veterans Day, state offices will be closed and mail delivery will be suspended.
The observance also coincides with National Veterans and Military Families Month, a period dedicated to acknowledging both service members and their families for their contributions.
“To every veteran and every military family: thank you for your service, sacrifice, and strength. Illinois is better because of you,” McCombie added.
McCombie was elected as a Republican representative to the Illinois State House in 2023 for the 89th District, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
