Illinois State Senator Li Arellano Jr. hosted students from across the district at his Youth Advisory Council at the State Capitol in Springfield on April 6. The event offered students a practical experience with the legislative process, including participation in a mock committee hearing based on legislation they developed last fall.
The Youth Advisory Council aims to give young people insight into how government functions and to encourage civic engagement among future leaders. Students toured both the Senate and House chambers and met with State Representatives Travis Weaver and Bradley Fritts to learn about cooperation between the two chambers.
During their visit, students also explored Illinois history with a tour of the Old State Capitol, gaining further understanding of state government foundations. “This council is incredibly important to me. It’s a chance to show the next generation of leaders how government works, while also hearing directly from them about the issues that matter most to young people in their daily lives. Their perspectives are valuable, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for their ideas and priorities throughout the rest of this session,” Arellano said.
Arellano thanked both students for participating and teachers and staff for supporting their involvement. He said he looks forward to hosting another Youth Advisory Council inside the district this fall.
Arellano, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois’ 37th Senate District in 2025 after replacing previous state senator Win Stoller, according to available information.
