House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has shared some interesting information about sweet corn in anticipation of the fourth annual Sweet Corn Day Celebration. The event is scheduled for August 1st at McCombie’s district office in Savanna, Illinois.

McCombie explained that sweet corn is pollinated by the wind. The tassel, which is the male reproductive part of the plant, contains pollen. This pollen is carried by the wind to the silk strands at the base of the cob, which serve as the female reproductive part. This process allows for effective pollination when two plants are close to each other.

The Sweet Corn Day Celebration will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on August 1st at 9317B IL Rt 84, Savanna, IL.
