A school shooting at Dixon High School had Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) rise in response at the May 17 House floor debate.

Demmer detailed the devastating incident that occurred the day before.

“The senior class gathered in the gymnasium to practice for graduation,” Demmer said. "That is a time that for students across Illinois and the country is a time of excitement and promise."

But not at Dixon. Unfortunately, moments later, a gunman interrupted their graduation practice, Demmer said, adding School Officer Mark Dallas saved the day. He said Dallas pursued the gunman, who then shot at him and Dallas returned fire, and struck and disarmed him.

“Thankfully no lives were lost,” Demmer said.

Demmer is preparing a resolution in honor of Dallas and asked his fellow lawmakers to join him in saluting the officer and all officials who prepare for school shootings.

“So, if a moment like this happens, and I hope it never does, they all know what to do,” Demmer said, adding a prayer of thanksgiving is warranted.

Rep. Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego) said in light of what happened in Dixon, lawmakers must act. He said superintendents in his district have asked him to spread a message of safety to improve safety drills.

“I urge every one of us to take a more active role in what happens in our school districts,” Wheeler said.
