Freeport FD responds to 129 fires in 2017

Freeport Fire Department responded to 402 calls in 2017 - 21.1 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Freeport included 129 fires - 60 structure fires, eight vehicle fires and 61 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $705,050 in fire loss - or about $5,466 per fire.

The department also received 272 false calls, including 13 malicious calls and 259 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Freeport Fire Department had an annual budget of $280,594 in 2017.

The Freeport Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 47 active employees and 64 retired or inactive employees, was $2,847,523 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $32,730 for every fire in 2016.
