Sterling FD responds to 101 fires in 2017

Sterling Fire Department responded to 269 calls in 2017 - 1.1 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Sterling included 101 fires - 64 structure fires, 19 vehicle fires and 18 other fires.

In all, the department saw $341,299 in fire loss - or about $3,379 per fire.

The department also received 168 false calls, including five malicious calls and 163 other false calls.

The Sterling Fire Department had an annual budget of $443,474 in 2017.

The Sterling Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 19 active employees and 31 retired or inactive employees, was $1,459,228 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $15,861 for every fire in 2016.
