Dixon Unit School District 170 students suspended 771 times in a single school year

Dixon Unit School District 170 reported 771 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 771 students during the year. That equates to 27.8 percent of the 2,771 students enrolled.

Of the 544 in-school suspensions, 398 were given to boys and 146 were given to girls, including 229 elementary or middle schoolers and 315 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 541 incidents. There were two incidents of tobacco. For 470 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 227 out-of-school suspensions, 189 were given to boys and 38 were given to girls, including 97 elementary or middle schoolers and 130 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 203 incidents. There were 11 incidents of drugs. For 90 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
