Sterling Community Unit School District 5 students suspended 136 times in a single school year

Sterling Community Unit School District 5 reported 136 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 136 students during the year. That equates to 4 percent of the 3,371 students enrolled.

Of the 70 in-school suspensions, 47 were given to boys and 23 were given to girls.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 55 incidents. There were 12 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 25 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.

Of the 66 out-of-school suspensions, 46 were given to boys and 20 were given to girls, including 43 elementary or middle schoolers and 23 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 44 incidents. There were 13 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 26 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
