City of Dixon issued the following announcement on Nov. 27.
The Dixon Public Works Department has once again done an incredible job of clearing major thorough ways and getting our side streets passable. This heavy 13 inch + snow caused considerable challenges for all communities and rural areas.
The Dixon Public Works crews were in before noon on Sunday getting salt down in preparation of the major snowfall and the full crew remained on duty until around 10 pm last night. The City left a smaller crew on duty to keep the major roads opened and to assist the police and fire departments in getting to emergencies. The full crew returned around 3 a.m.
City plow crews will be clearing the snow pile accumulation in the downtown tonight at 1 a.m. Crews are expected to work through the night.
CITY RELEASES INFORMATION FOR RESIDENCE AND BUSINESS SNOW REMOVAL:
Every homeowner faces the same problem, when it snows municipal plows push snow right back into the driveway just after the drive has been cleared. It's aggravating, frustrating and unfortunately unavoidable.
City plows remove snow by pushing it from the roadway into the right-of-way and, sadly, driveway approaches located in the right-of way. City crews are responsible for keeping the roadways clear to allow for safe passage of vehicles and emergency equipment, unfortunately this means that snow will end up in driveways. Exactly where homeowners don't want it.
As irritating as the plowed snow may be, please do not deposit the snow back into the street. This practice contributes to hazardous road conditions, more passes by snow plows and snow repeatedly pushed into driveways.
Creating a snow-free "landing zone" adjacent to driveways will allow the plow to unload snow prior crossing the drive and will provide some relief. The attached photo is from PennDOT and provides for clarity:
The City of Dixon understands your frustration and appreciates your cooperation. Again, thank you to our Public Works crews for a job well done.
