The price of local government in 2017: Lee County

The Lee County budget was $25.03 million for its 2017 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 5.4 percent from 2016, when the county spent $23.75 million.

Lee County has a population of 34,406.

Since 2001, the Lee County budget has grown by 40 percent, from $17.88 million. The county population has fallen 4.4 percent over the same period, from 36,000.

Salaries accounted for 31.9 percent of county spending in 2017. Lee County property taxpayers paid $7.98 million for 147 full-time employees and 21 part-time employees.

In 2001, the county had 142 full-time employees and 78 part-time employees, and spent $7.11 million.
