ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 89: Gov. Pritzker Signs Legislation to make Illinois, “Abortion Destination”

89

Illinois State House District 89 issued the following announcement on June 12

Making good on a promise made on the campaign trail, Governor JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 25 on Wednesday, enacting one of the “most extreme and far-reaching abortion rights expansions in the country,” according to State Representative Andrew Chesney.

“This is a sad day for Illinois,” continued Chesney. “Making good on distinguishing Illinois as an abortion destination is a sad distinction for a State plagued by many sad distinctions, both fiscal and social.”

“This legislation creates a fundamental right for abortions for Illinoisans, in some cases even late-term abortions as well as repealing certain safety standards and repeals the prohibition on sex-selective abortions,” said Rep. Chesney.

SB 25 passed with Floor Amendment 1 by a vote of 64-50-4-1 with every Republican in the Illinois House voting NO. Six Democrats broke ranks and joined Rep. Chesney in voting NO. The Senate concurred by a vote of 34-20-3, with every Senate Republican voting NO.

Governor Pritzker signed the legislation and delivered, largely, political comments from Chicago on Wednesday standing in front of cheering Democrat legislators and Democrat statewide officeholders alongside groups like Planned Parenthood and Personal PAC (a political organization whose presence was noted by Governor Pritzker at this legislative bill signing).
