BYRON FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT: Summer Camp Update

Update

Byron Forest Preserve District issued the following announcement on April 30.

I wanted to keep in touch with everyone about our planning process, and where we currently stand with summer camp and Adventure Club. We are beginning to get a sense of what guidelines will be in place for potential summer programming, and it sounds like the CDC will be posting their recommendations later this week. Some of the early guidelines sound very reasonable, and some make me question if we can follow them well enough given the facilities we have. Some make me wonder if the end result will still look and feel like camp, a place where kids are safe, cherished, and encouraged to bloom.

Regardless, we will not move forward with summer planning unless we are certain, first and foremost, that we can keep campers and staff as physically safe as possible and follow the guidelines put in place by the federal or state government. Our second consideration will be how to retain the quality of our programs and to ensure that our camp environment also promotes mental and emotional wellness for everyone.

We know that day camp and Adventure Club are important to you, and they are important to us, as well. Much of our time is being devoted to discussions about what our summer will look like; it certainly won’t be what we are used to.

Our next step is to read and digest the CDC guidelines, as well as anything out of Governor Pritzker’s office and from our insurance carrier, the Park District Risk Management Agency. We will determine from those what is appropriate for us as the Forest Preserve, and make any announcements after that. Assuming all of the guidelines are published this week as promised, we will have information for you one way or another next week. I would like to touch base with each of our day camp families as we proceed, so you may receive a phone call from me next week.

Preschool parents will continue to receive updates via Dojo. You may also contact us via email: byronsummercamp@gmail.com and crystalfrisk@byronforestpreserve.com.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone. We are thinking about all of you!
