The Freeport Community Foundation in July awarded a $7,000 grant to the Senior Resource Center, which operates programs to assist people aged 50 and older residing in Stevenson and Jo Daviess counties.
The grant will help fund a program to expand more direct financial aid to elders when necessary; for example, for short-term mortgage or rental payment assistance, emergency food or utility aid, or help with transportation to medical appointments in another county, the Journal Standard reported in July.
The center offers a wide range of services to area seniors, caregivers and family members; including money management, Medicare savings, and senior health insurance programs; homestead property and tax deferral information; support groups; case management; and (normally) health, wellness, and entertainment activities.
While the COVID-19 pandemic initially forced the indefinite suspension of activities and closed its buildings to the public, other programs are still in operation, and it has resumed limited on-site programs.
