Residents are supporting the redevelopment and preservation of a former school located in Galena, but have also brought up several concerns about adding a new structure.
“The change to higher density would put it at almost two and a half times higher (than it already is),” Diana Pitstick, a Galena resident, said during a virtual meeting, the Telegraph Herald reported. “A lot of us support housing for low-income housing, but it seems like it is such a high density for such a small area. The density for the area will be overwhelming.”
During the virtual meeting, officials were discussing the former St. Mary's School, which would be converted into affordable housing units. It would also add a new structure of affordable housing units.
“We are looking for probably single people or maybe someone that has one kid,” Jon Davidshofer, vice president of the Rock Island-based organization, said during the meeting, the Telegraph Herald reported. “This is really for someone that can be eligible within the income bracket.”
But Amy Alderman, a local resident, is concerned with the traffic that will come with the new affordable housing units.
“As it is right now, Elk Street is a danger to cross as a pedestrian and as a driver,” she said during the meeting, the Telegraph Herald reported. “It’s a frightening place to drive at any time of the day.”
Right now the plans are preliminary, but local officials wanted the input of locals before making any more plans for the housing.
