Open Burn and Curbside Pickup of Yard Waste Dates Set

9

City of Galena Fire Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 13

The Galena City Council voted on October 12 to approve a four-day open burning period of residential yard waste this fall. Fire Chief, Bob Conley, announced today that the open burn dates will be November 4-7 with rain dates of November 11-14. Burning will only be allowed during the rain dates if conditions are too wet to burn during the November 11-14 period.

To provide residents an alternative to burning, the City is offering free curbside pickup of yard waste the first three Tuesdays in November (November 2, 9, and 16). Curbside pickup is by appointment only as described below.

All open burning shall be carried out in compliance with the following rules:

  1. Only landscape waste produced on the property shall be burned.
  2. Open burning shall be allowed during daylight hours only.
  3. Burning must be supervised at all times.
  4. Burning shall not be allowed on windy days.
  5. If possible, a garden hose shall be made available at the burn site.
  6. No burning is allowed on city streets.
  7. No burning shall create a visibility hazard on roadways or railroad tracks.
  8. Care must be taken to locate fires a sufficient distance from buildings, vehicles or other exposures to prevent fire spread.
  9. Violations of the burn policy will result in a citation from the Galena Police Department.
  10. If the burn gets out of control the Galena Fire Department shall be called immediately by dialing 911.
The following rules apply to the free curbside pickup of yard waste:

  1. Yard waste includes only organic materials, including grass, leaves, plants, brush, sticks and limbs.
  2. Grass, leaves, and plants must be in either plastic or paper bags.
  3. Sticks and limbs must be cut in lengths of four feet or less and bound with twine, if possible, for easy lifting.
  4. Bags and bound sticks and limbs should be set at near the street and separate from garbage and recycling containers.
  5. When setting the materials at the street, residents must call City Hall at 815-777-1050 or email matibagos@cityofgalena.org to schedule collection by the City crew.
  6. Collection will occur on the Tuesdays of November 2, 9, and 16.
  7. The service is being offered at no cost to residents.
Beginning after the free curbside pickup period on November 17, resident who elect to set out yard waste at the curb for pickup must purchase a Yard Waste Tag at City Hall in accordance with regular policy. Each tag is $2.00. A tag must be attached to each bag. Sticks or tree limbs are not eligible for tags or curbside pickup.

As an alternative to curbside pickup, residents may transport their yard waste to the old landfill site on Donegan Street. Please note that state law prohibits contractors from depositing landscape debris or any other materials at the old landfill site. No garbage, lumber or other materials are accepted at the facility.

During the fall season beginning October 13-November 30, the old landfill site is open weekly 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
