Analysis: Sterling administrators rank 368th in state for average pay

Administrators in Sterling Community Unit School District 5 earn an average of $104,712 per year, ranking 368th out of 864 districts in Illinois, according to a NW Illinois News analysis of the latest Illinois schools report card.

The 2020 average is 15.8 percent higher than in 2016 and 22.2 percent higher than in 2011. District administrators make 5.9 percent less than the state average of $111,293.

Administrator salaries depend on the district's size, location and resources, as well as the individual's level of experience and education, according to the Illinois State Board of Education report.

The Sterling School District in Whiteside County enrolled 3275 students in 2019-2020. There is an average of 236 students for every administrator, compared to a statewide ratio of 171 to 1.
