State Sen. Win Stoller, a Peoria Republican, took to social media recently to question the continuation of COVID-19 state-of-emergency declarations.

Stoller took aim at Gov. JB Pritzker in a Facebook posting, noting that the state seemingly is caught in a loop, much like the movie “Groundhog Day.”

"Clearly the emergency phase of COVID has been over for a long time,” he said in the post. “However, our Governor keeps declaring emergency powers for himself. Why? When will it end?”

Stoller has previously taken aim at Pritzker for his use of emergency orders during the pandemic. A March newsletter on Stoller’s website noted that the Democratic governor has issued more than 100 executive orders, and that other lawmakers are growing weary of the tactic.

“Through those orders and mandates, the governor single-handedly created chaos, confusion, and devastation to families across Illinois,” state Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville) said in the newsletter. “From school and business shutdowns, to agency dysfunction, the governor’s go-it-alone approach has failed us all.”

Lawmakers in Springfield pushed Senate Bill 3888, which would have required Pritzker to seek General Assembly approval to renew emergency powers 30 days after an initial declaration of a state emergency; the Illinois General Assembly website said. The measure was referred to Assignments on Jan. 21.

Stoller also leveled criticism at Pritzker for issues with the SAFE-T Act, the Illinois Valley Times reported. He has called for immediate repeal of the law.
