City of Byron Public Safety Committee met Jan. 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Alderman Hobbie called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm.

1. ROLL CALL:

MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Alderman Zeke Hobbie, Alderman Mike Gyorkos, Alderman Christy Hanlin

MEMBERS ABSENT: None

OTHERS PRESENT: Mayor John Rickard, Clerk Caryn Huber, City Administrator Brian Brooks, Attorney Aaron Szeto, Police Chief Todd Murray, Engineer Jason Stoll, Director Aaron Vincer, Alderman Mittzi Fulrath

2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA – JANUARY 18, 2023 – Alderman Hanlin motioned to approve the January 18, 2023, agenda as presented. Motion seconded by Alderman Hobbie. Roll call vote: Hanlin, AYE; Hobbie, AYE; Gyorkos, AYE. Motion passed: AYE, 3; NAY, 0; ABS, 0.

3. PUBLIC COMMENT – None

4. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES – November 16, 2022 – Alderman Hanlin motioned to approve the November 16, 2022 minutes as presented. Motion seconded by Alderman Hobbie. Roll call vote: Gyorkos, AYE; Hanlin, AYE; Hobbie, AYE. Motion passed: AYE, 3; NAY, 0; ABS, 0.

5. FLOCK CAMERAS – Chief Murray will examine next year’s budget and consider adding the FLOCK cameras. The cameras would be permanently mounted at four locations. He will discuss with Buster Barton to determine if the school would like to partner with the city on this. The system continues to be upgraded, and the cameras would have upgrading capabilities. The cameras only identify license plates on the side of the street where they are mounted. Placement would be coordinated with the Sheriff’s office.

6. POLICE DEPARTMENT BUDGET– Budget is on track to date. One item, Dues, needs to be looked at for accuracy. Alderman Hobbie asked if all the squad car purchases have been made. Chief Murray replied that they have, but he is planning on replacing their oldest car next year.

7. POLICE DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY & UPDATE – The December 2022 Activity Report is in Dropbox. There have been recent reports of items being taken out of unlocked vehicles. One home in Rose Meadows had tires slashed and their swimming pool punctured last week. The Police Department requested any home camera footage that might be helpful. • Officer Hankins is in his second week of the 16 week training. He has passed all initial tests. He will return in April and begin training here. • As mentioned previously, all vehicles are fine except for the oldest squad car which has 70,000 miles on it. • One Officer has left for the Rockford Police Department. • A vehicle recently hit the speed signs and street sign at Mill and Tower Roads and Mill and Kingsway. The street sign has been recovered. Director Vincer will replace the signs.

9. ADJOURN – Alderman Hanlin motioned to adjourn. Motion seconded by Alderman Gyorkos. Roll call vote: Hobbie, AYE; Gyorkos, AYE; Hanlin, AYE. Motion passed: AYE, 3; NAY, 0; ABS, 0.

Alderman Hobbie adjourned the meeting at 6:11 pm.
