Rep. Daniel Swanson shared an update on the passage of two bills sponsored by him in the spring session in a July 14 news release on his website. Of the two bills, one looks to aid Fire Protection Districts and the other to fight against Lyme disease.
"Two pieces of legislation I sponsored this spring, one to help Fire Protection Districts and another to aid in the fight against Lyme disease, have been signed into law," Swanson said in the July 14 news release.
Rep. Swanson was sworn into the Illinois General Assembly on January 11, 2017. He is a retired Lt. Colonel in the Illinois National Guard. When he's not in Springfield and representing his constituents, Swanson works on the family farm with his father, his brother, his son, and his nephew, according to his official biography.
The first bill sponsored by Swanson, House Bill 1625, specifies who is qualified to appraise surplus real estate before a fire protection district sells surplus property. Swanson filed the legislation on Feb. 1, 2023, and the bill arrived in the Senate on March 21. It was sent to the governor for his signature on June 9, and signed on June 30.
The second bill sponsored by Swanson that has been signed into law, House Bill 2584, allows the Department of Natural Resources to issue Lyme research decals to fund tick research and education, to be paid as grants to the Illinois Lyme Association. The bill allocates $10 from initial registrations and $23 of each renewal to be deposited in the Tick Research, Education and Evaluation Fund, as well as $15 per issuance and $2 per renewal that goes to the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund. Swanson filed this bill on Feb. 15, 2023, and it moved to the Senate on March 22. It was signed by the governor on June 30.
"I was very pleased by the bipartisan cooperation which led to both of these bills being passed and now becoming law. It is good to see that we can bring people together in support of our Fire Protection Districts and the fight against Lyme disease," Swanson said in his news release.
Lyme disease is a bacterial disease that infected deer ticks or black-legged ticks pass along when they bite a person, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Symptoms include a ring-like red rash, fatigue, chills, headache, and joint and muscle pain, among other symptoms. It can be treated early with antibiotics.
