As we enter the holiday season, Illinois residents have many reasons to be grateful. The state is known for its agricultural prowess, and the hardworking farmers deserve our highest gratitude. Illinois farmers produce three million turkeys each year, ensuring that many families enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. Not only that, but the state's dairy farmers contribute to the meal as well, with products like butter, cheese, sour cream, and whipped cream.

Illinois is also a major producer of wheat, so those who had bread, biscuits, or cakes on their Thanksgiving menu supported the livelihoods of wheat producers in the state. The vegetables that rounded out the meal may have also come from Illinois, further highlighting the state's agricultural contributions. And let's not forget the pumpkin pie, which is likely made from Illinois-grown pumpkins, as the state produces about 90 percent of the canned pumpkin sold in the United States.

But Illinois has more to offer than just agricultural success. The state is home to numerous top-tier industry leaders and serves as a national and global hub of commerce with around 40 Fortune 500 companies. Additionally, tourism plays a significant role in the state's economy, making it an undeniable economic engine.

On a local level, there is much to appreciate and celebrate. Several high school football teams from Northwest Illinois qualified for the IHSA playoffs and performed admirably in their divisions. The Lena High School Panthers and the Byron High School Tigers deserve extra kudos for advancing to the state finals. In the state playoffs for girls' volleyball, the Galena Pirates emerged as the Class 1A State Champions, showcasing the dedication and grit of the players and coaches.

During this time of year, it's common to see volunteers from the community ringing bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle drive. These individuals bring hope and assistance to thousands of families in need. Every penny, nickel, dime, and quarter that is deposited into a red kettle remains local, truly embodying the spirit of "neighbors helping neighbors."

Toys for Tots bins can also be found throughout Illinois, including the 45th District. The U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign ensures that every child, regardless of their family's financial situation, receives a gift at Christmastime. Since 1947, this campaign has been delivering smiles to children, thanks to the support of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and community organizations.

And if you find yourself near Freeport, make sure to visit the "Hero Tree" in front of the Stephenson County Courthouse. This tree pays tribute to local military heroes and is adorned with homemade ornaments made by children and adults from the region. The illuminated Hero Tree symbolizes the community's gratitude and appreciation for those who have selflessly served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms.

As the holiday season unfolds, there is no shortage of reasons for Illinois residents to feel grateful. From the hardworking farmers to the local sports teams, volunteers, and community initiatives, the state is filled with reasons to celebrate and show appreciation. Wishing everyone a blessed holiday season filled with hope and joy.
