Chris Bishop, the candidate for State Senate in District 37, has called on residents to acquaint themselves with the 64 new Illinois laws slated to take effect in 2024. Bishop underscored the importance of staying abreast of legislative changes that will impact various facets of life in the state.
“There are quite a few new laws heading our way for 2024,” Bishop said on Facebook. "Take a minute and check them out!”
According to NBC Chicago, these new laws encompass a broad spectrum of topics affecting diverse aspects of life in Illinois. The legislation addresses issues ranging from family rights and transportation to environmental concerns, consumer protection, and public health. One notable law is SB 1883, which prohibits any person from allowing members of the public to come into direct contact with bears or nonhuman primates. This law reflects an emphasis on public safety and animal welfare.
Another significant law is HB 3924, which mandates schools to educate students in grades 9-12 about the dangers of fentanyl. This measure seeks to inform young people about the risks associated with this potent synthetic opioid. Also noteworthy is HB 2954 or The Civil Liability for Doxing Act. According to a news release, this law stipulates that individuals who engage in "doxing" – publicly revealing private information online – may face civil damages along with criminal liability.
Currently serving his second term on the Dixon City Council, Bishop entered politics following the City of Dixon's encounter with the largest municipal fraud case in U.S. history in 2015. He presently works as a grain marketing and crop insurance representative in the private sector. With a master's degree in kinesiology, Bishop's political journey stems from his extensive experience as a teacher and high school wrestling coach at Dixon Public Schools where he served for ten years, as per his website.
The 37th State Senate District comprises Lee, Bureau, Henry, DeKalb, Ogle, Rock Island, Whiteside, Stark, Peoria, Woodford and Marshall counties. The district is currently represented by State Sen. Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills). As reported by WGLT, Stoller announced in August that he would not seek a third term.
