State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) recently attended the annual football banquet for the Byron High School football team to recognize their outstanding achievements. During the event, Senator Chesney presented honorary recognitions from the Senate to the athletes and coaches.

Expressing his admiration for the team, Senator Chesney stated, "I enjoyed following the Tigers' season during the fall and truly believe these players aren't just the best in the Class 3A division, I believe this team is one of the best in the history of Illinois. To defeat a football powerhouse like Mt. Carmel in a 69-7 IHSA record-setting win was just remarkable."

The championship game, which took place on November 24, 2023, showcased the Tigers' dominance on the field. They swiftly took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and extended it to a commanding 49-0 advantage by halftime. In the third quarter, the team even broke the IHSA state scoring record before ultimately finishing the game with an astounding 69 points.

Senator Chesney commended the 2023 Tiger football team, led by head coach Jeff Boyer and a talented group of assistant coaches, for their exceptional season. He remarked, "These young men dominated in their regular and post-season play and represented their school with pride. These athletes will go far in their future athletic and other endeavors."
