In a bid to bring about much-needed ethics reform in Illinois, State Representative McCombie is spearheading efforts to address existing loopholes in the state's laws and restore faith in the government. The push for reform comes on the heels of the indictment of former Speaker Mike Madigan, a pivotal moment that highlighted the urgency for change.

Madigan, a prominent figure in Illinois politics, was indicted on federal charges in 2022, prompting calls for increased accountability and transparency within the government. State Representative McCombie's proposed measure, HB4119, seeks to prohibit elected officials from using political campaign funds for their criminal defense, a move aimed at ensuring campaign financing is used for its intended purpose.

Presenting HB4119 to the Ethics and Elections Committee in the Illinois House, McCombie emphasized the importance of the measure in advancing ethics reform within the legislature. However, the response from Democratic lawmakers, particularly those who previously supported Madigan, has been noticeably muted, underscoring the challenges faced in enacting meaningful reform.

In addition to HB4119, McCombie is backing four other ethics reform measures, including initiatives to suspend benefits for officials charged with felonies, enact lobbying bans, and enhance transparency in ethics reporting. Despite the uphill battle to pass these reforms, McCombie remains resolute in her commitment to delivering a government that upholds the highest ethical standards.

Reflecting on the need for change, McCombie stressed, "Illinois residents deserve an ethical government worthy of their trust." The ongoing efforts to advance ethics reform underscore a broader commitment to improving governance and restoring public confidence in the state's institutions. As these measures progress through the legislative process, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engage with the developments on ilga.gov and repmccombie.com.
