Illinois residents can now benefit from the convenience of online notarization as the Illinois Secretary of State’s office introduces a new Electronic Notary system. This innovative system allows individuals to notarize documents remotely, marking a significant step towards modernization for the state office.
The implementation of the E-Notary system follows legislative approval by the Illinois General Assembly in 2021 and the proactive efforts of current Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. As a result, residents can now easily access online notarization services through the state's official platform.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, individuals seeking electronic notarization can utilize the online Notary Search to locate a notary offering this service. To complete the online notarization process, customers are required to have a device with video chat capabilities, such as a computer or phone, along with a valid ID.
In terms of cost, electronic notarization fees may vary among service providers but are capped at $25, as mandated by state law.
The introduction of the E-Notary system in Illinois is set to streamline the notarization process and enhance accessibility for residents seeking efficient document authentication services.
