The Illinois House of Representatives recently passed a new state budget, which includes $746.5 million in tax increases and pay raises for politicians. The budget does not introduce reforms to reduce the cost of living for families or seniors on fixed incomes. Representative Tony McCombie voted against the budget, citing concerns over its fiscal impact.

McCombie criticized a provision that allows municipalities and counties to impose their own sales tax of up to one percent on groceries without local voter approval. "This budget is a negligent political document that comes at a massive price to Illinois families," McCombie stated.

State Representative Patrick Windhorst highlighted the contentious nature of the budget's passage, noting that it took Democrats three attempts to secure the necessary votes. “I think it should be clear to everyone in this state what this super majority is willing to do to ram a tax increase down the throats of the citizens of Illinois at 4:30 in the morning,” Windhorst remarked.

Legislation affecting rural landowners was also passed, allowing for carbon capture and sequestration wells on private property without unanimous consent from landowners. McCombie voiced her opposition, emphasizing her commitment to advocating for property rights.

In healthcare news, Senate Bill 3599 aims to expand patient-centric healthcare options by requiring insurers to cover Mobile Integrated Healthcare services starting January 1, 2026. This initiative seeks to reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and hospital readmissions.

McCombie continues to seek input from northwest Illinois residents regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) management by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR). She encourages constituents affected by CWD policies to share their views through an online survey.

Additionally, McCombie has launched the 8th Annual Summer Reading Club for elementary school students in her district. The program encourages students to read eight books before July 15th and offers rewards for participation.

Lastly, Sweet Corn Appreciation Day will be celebrated on August 1st as part of an annual tradition initiated by legislation passed in 2022 with unanimous support.
