A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Dixon Finance Department on October 25, 2024. The request, filed by NW Illinois News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought specific records related to sales tax collected from retailers.
The requested information includes detailed data from January 1, 2024, up until the present date. Specifically, we asked for records showing the sales tax collected from retailers by month versus projected figures. Additionally, we requested the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month and the names of each retailer along with their gross retail sales reported for each month.
As a news organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to these public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that as a media organization disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver under FOIA regulations.
We await a response from the City Of Dixon Finance Department and will continue our efforts in bringing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
