On Monday, President Joe Biden took a significant action by commuting the sentences and pardoning more than 1,500 convicted individuals. Among those who received clemency was Rita Crundwell, the former Comptroller of Dixon, Illinois. This decision has sparked criticism from local officials.
State Representative Bradley Fritts (R-Dixon) expressed strong disapproval regarding the commutation of Crundwell's sentence. "To say I am outraged by the commutation of the sentence of Rita Crundwell is a great understatement," stated Rep. Fritts. He emphasized that Crundwell stole over $50 million from Dixon taxpayers, violated public trust, and used the funds for personal luxury.
Fritts also linked this commutation to broader concerns about presidential decisions. "After pardoning his own convicted felon son for crimes dating back more than ten years, President Biden doubled down on the corruption of his Presidency and lifted Crundwell’s house arrest," he said.
Crundwell's early release from prison had previously stirred controversy in Dixon due to a lack of prior notification to city officials. Fritts described these actions as a "double slap in the face" for Dixon residents who were affected by her crimes.
Questions remain regarding whether Crundwell will be required to repay the stolen money. Fritts noted uncertainty around this issue: “At this time, I am unsure that Rita Crundwell is still required to pay back the money she still owes the citizens of Dixon, and that is also unacceptable,” he remarked.
The representative concluded with a call for clarity: “The people of my district and the citizens of Illinois deserve answers.”
