State Senator Andrew Chesney and Machesney Park Mayor Steve Johnson are organizing a community event for residents to securely dispose of personal documents. The free event is planned for Saturday, May 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Machesney Park Town Center, in the parking lot of the former JCPenney.
Senator Chesney emphasized the importance of data security in today's environment: “As we continue to see growing concerns about identity theft and personal data security, providing a secure and convenient way for residents to dispose of sensitive documents is more important than ever. I’m proud to bring this free service to the community and give people a safe way to protect themselves and their families.”
The event organizers encourage residents to bring items such as old bank statements, tax documents, and medical records, restricting the drop-off to two banker boxes per vehicle. The shred truck will operate until it is full, and participants are advised to stay in their vehicles while staff unloads the documents. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed, but large binder clips, plastic folders, and electronics are not accepted.
Chesney also stated his commitment to community service: “Government should work for the people and that includes offering simple, useful services like this one. We’re making it easy to get rid of old documents safely, without any hassle or cost to residents.”
