Illinois House Republicans have voiced strong opposition to a proposed $6 billion tax increase, which they argue would negatively impact working families and businesses in the state. During a news conference at the Capitol, Deputy Republican Leader Norine Hammond, along with Assistant Republican Leaders C.D. Davidsmeyer and Amy Elik, criticized the tax proposals from progressive interest groups.
“These progressive special interests that are part of the Illinois Revenue Alliance, aka the ‘Tax-and-Spend Alliance,’ are proposing $6 billion in new taxes on hardworking Illinois families and businesses,” said Rep. Hammond. She expressed concern over plans to raise the Estate Tax by reducing exemptions from $4 million to $2 million, arguing it would harm family farmers.
Rep. Elik questioned why state agencies have not suggested budget cuts instead of relying on increased taxes. “The people of Illinois are tapped out. We cannot accept ANY tax increases," she stated.
Governor JB Pritzker has been criticized for his political rhetoric while pursuing presidential aspirations for 2028. At various events, he has made statements interpreted as encouraging political unrest and violence against Republicans. State Rep. Davidsmeyer condemned these remarks: “Governor Pritzker, your comments are appalling."
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie also responded to Pritzker’s comments: “In a time when political violence has already taken a terrible toll on this country, such inflammatory language is reckless.”
