As the end of the spring legislative session approaches, Illinois lawmakers are engaged in intense discussions over budget and tax reforms. Republican leaders, including Leader McCombie, Deputy Leader Norine Hammond, and Deputy Leader Ryan Spain, have raised concerns about new tax proposals and their potential impact on residents.

Representative Ryan Spain has cautioned Illinoisans to "watch their wallets" as House Republicans aim to block any Democrat-led tax increases. The state faces a billion-dollar budget deficit for FY26, with Democrats proposing significant spending increases. Governor JB Pritzker and the Democratic majority are preparing to pass what could be the largest budget in state history at $55.2 billion.

Republican leaders argue that without structural reforms, increased revenue will not solve existing issues but rather exacerbate them. They criticize the proposed $6 billion in new taxes intended to fund various initiatives, including healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants.

Energy policy is another contentious issue as Illinois confronts rising energy costs and demand. Assistant Republican Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer criticized the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGA), attributing current energy challenges to "radical environmental policies." State Rep. Travis Weaver emphasized that "smart policy" is needed to address these challenges effectively.

In addition to legislative matters, Memorial Day observances in Illinois highlight historical roots dating back to the Civil War era when General John A. Logan played a pivotal role in establishing this day of remembrance.

Leader McCombie continues to engage constituents through events like her Spring Photo Contest and Summer Reading Program while offering resources such as museum passes for family activities.
