The former Speaker of the Illinois House, Michael J. Madigan, has been ordered to report to prison by October 13, 2025. Madigan will begin serving a 7.5-year sentence after being convicted on ten counts of federal criminal offenses, including bribery and conspiracy.

Madigan was sentenced in June 2025 following a high-profile trial. He has since filed appeals seeking to overturn his convictions, which are now moving through the federal court system. In addition, Madigan and his attorneys requested that his imprisonment be delayed until the appeal process is complete. On August 8th, Judge Blakey denied this request, keeping the October prison date in place.

In response to these developments and ongoing calls for ethics reform in Illinois government, House Minority Leader Tony McCombie released a statement:

“Illinoisans are sick and tired of corruption running rampant in their state government. While Democrats protect the status quo, House Republicans are fighting to restore public trust and accountability. Ethics reform isn’t optional, it’s essential. The people of Illinois deserve leaders who serve them, not self-serving politicians who manipulate the system for personal gain. We will not stop pushing for real reforms to clean up this broken system!”

McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
