Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has sponsored legislation aimed at encouraging students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The bill, House Bill 2802, was signed into law last week and allows students enrolled in STEM courses to take one excused absence per school year for participation in a STEM-related externship, with approval from school administration.
Agriculture continues to be a significant part of Illinois' economy. The new law is intended to support educational growth in fields that contribute to this sector's ongoing success.
The measure also extends excused absences for students involved in 4-H and FFA programs.
“Opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and math fields in Illinois are boundless,” said McCombie. “But we can and must do more to support and promote those opportunities.”
“Creating this pathway to allow for additional out of classroom experiences for students will be impactful not only for their education but future career opportunities,” McCombie added.
McCombie was elected as a Republican representative of the state's 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
