House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has criticized Governor J.B. Pritzker’s recent Executive Order, which directs state agencies to identify potential cuts of up to 4% from the Fiscal Year 2026 General Funds appropriations. The order comes as Illinois faces pressure to restrain spending.
Governor Pritzker attributed the need for spending cuts to economic policies from Washington, D.C., specifically pointing to former President Donald Trump. However, McCombie offered a different perspective in comments made to the Center Square.
“Pritzker blaming Trump and not Democratic policies impacting the economy is a smokescreen for more tax increases,” said McCombie.
Following the announcement of the Executive Order, McCombie released an additional statement: “We warned that this budget was irresponsible and overspent. Stop passing blame, Governor. Illinoisans aren’t buying that recent policy changes in Washington DC are to blame for the decades of Illinois financial mismanagement.”
McCombie, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
