Savanna, Illinois native Cameron Jones has been selected by NASA as a member of its 2025 astronaut candidate class. The announcement was made by Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie, who represents the 89th legislative district.

Major Jones is a combat veteran and test pilot in the U.S. Air Force, with assignments at Edwards Air Force Base and Nellis Air Force Base. He has accumulated more than 1,600 hours flying high-performance aircraft. As part of NASA’s ten-member Class of 2025, he will now begin a two-year spaceflight training program. Upon completion, qualified trainees may be chosen for future missions, including those under the Artemis program that aims to return Americans to the Moon.

Leader McCombie commented on the selection: "This is exciting news coming from Leader McCombie’s 89th legislative district; Leader McCombie sends best wishes and congratulations to Major Jones!"

McCombie, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 and succeeded Andrew Chesney as representative for the state's 89th House District.
