Today marks National Farmer’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the efforts of farmers and their contributions to families, the economy, and communities.
In Illinois, agriculture is deeply rooted in daily life. According to data from the Illinois Farm Bureau, more than 482,000 jobs in the state are tied to farming and related sectors. Of the 72,200 farms in Illinois, 96% are family-owned and often passed down through generations.
Illinois ranks first in soybean production nationally, second in corn production, and fourth in pork production. The state also has 2,640 food manufacturing companies that process agricultural products into goods for sale. This sector leads the nation in processed food sales.
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie commented on National Farmer’s Day: “Today is National Farmer’s Day: a time to honor the incredible men and women whose hard work feeds our families, fuels our economy, and sustains our communities.” She added: “Here in Illinois, farming isn’t just an industry, it’s a way of life.” McCombie continued by noting that these achievements reflect not only numbers but also “a farmer rising before dawn, working through every season, and investing in the future of our land and our people.”
McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023 after Andrew Chesney held the position previously.
She concluded her remarks by stating: “Today, House Minority Leader Tony McCombie joins communities across the state in celebrating and thanking our Illinois farmers for their grit, their heart, and their unwavering dedication to putting food on our tables.”
