Former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell is seeking to be released from prison due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crundwell admitted she stole more than $50 million from the community and was sentenced to nearly 20 years. She's served seven years in prison, WGN reported.
“With my deteriorating health condition and the danger of the COVID-19 pandemic, I feel like I have been given a death sentence,” Crundwell wrote in a letter seeking release, according to WGN.
Crundwell noted in the letter she has kidney and hip trouble and that while serving her time she has been a "model prisoner," the news agency reported. She wrote that she would not pose a danger to the community if she were granted home confinement and that she would continue to do everything she can to make up for her previous mistakes.
Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss said he hopes that she will not be released, stating that the community stood united against her receiving early release, according to WGN.
