Illinois State Sen. Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) is urging voters to stand firm in their opposition to any new tax increases by signing off on a petition voicing their displeasure.
“Illinois voters sent a clear message this November when they resoundingly rejected the graduated tax hike,” Chesney said. “Just one month later, Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) has ignored the will of the people by promising an income tax increase on Illinoisans during his bid for Speaker. Sign the petition to tell Mike Madigan cannot afford more taxes.”
Now under increased scrutiny in an ongoing federal corruption probe involving ComEd and a pay-for-play scheme, where all perks were reportedly steered to him in exchange for favorable legislation, Illinois House Speaker Madigan made the pledge to House Black Caucus members as part of his campaign to secure the 60 votes needed for another term. He has held this position for roughly four decades.

In addition to the criminal investigation, a Special House Committee panel was also recently convened to look into some of Madigan’s most suspect behavior to determine if any sanctions up to possible expulsion are warranted.
Veteran state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) has emerged as Madigan’s primary challenger, hoping to take advantage of the fact at least 19 democratic lawmakers have publicly vowed not to support his reelection efforts.
Chesney insists his mind has long been made up.
“Madigan and Pritzker looking to raise taxes on everyone,” Chesney said. “I will never vote to increase your taxes. Springfield has enough of your money.”
Earlier this fall, four individuals with ties to Madigan were indicted as part of the ComED probe, among them longtime Madigan pal and lobbyist Michael McClain, who counts bribery among the charges he faces.
