Byron Forest Preserve District issued the following announcement on Mar. 30.
Join local beekeeping expert Jeff Ludwig and various instructors each month to learn about the beekeeping process. Workshops take place on Sundays from 2 - 4 PM and is only $2 per person.
April 11 - Feeding bees and preparing for splitting and re-queening over-wintered colonies. First mite treatment begins
May 16* - Knowing when to put on supers, swarm prevention and using swarm traps, developing replacement colonies, also raising and marking queens.
June 13* - Getting the most out of your colonies, honey extraction how-to’s and uses for beeswax.
July 11* - Mite control, marketing strategies, and health department updates.
August 8* - Checking for mites, overall health, and queenless bee colonies.
September 12* - Mite treatments and getting bees ready for over-wintering.
October 10 - Over-wintering review for healthy bees and checking mite load.
November 14 - Review the year, clean equipment, and assembly of new equipment.
December 12 - Christmas party for beekeepers - honey tasting, honey recipe samples, wassail, door prizes, and lots of bee talk about ordering bees for spring shipment.
