State Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Springfield) is promoting the annual Savanna Community Blood Drive on her website and Facebook page.
The blood drive is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, at the Savanna Fire Department Truck Bay at 101 Main St.
"Annual Blood Drive - Jan 3rd! Kick-off the year off and save a life; please sign up! Call our office at 815-632-7384 or visit www.redcross.org (sponsor code: 0406688)," McCombie announced on Facebook.
Although appointments are requested, walk-ins will be accepted and donors will get a free Red Cross T-shirt.
“This drive would never be as successful as it has been without the incredible support of the Savanna community. Year after year, the community steps up to the call for blood donations which go toward helping to save lives," McCombie said in the press release.
Donations throughout the winter months are essential since many potential donors are engaged in holiday celebrations, while others can become ineligible due to seasonal illnesses.
In addition, harsh weather can cause blood drives to be postponed or canceled entirely.
While all blood donors are requested, individuals who are O negative, A negative, B negative, or platelet donors are needed immediately to assist patients in receiving life-saving medical care.
"We are grateful for those who respond to the constant need for blood donations and especially during this time of critical need due to the pandemic,” McCombie posted.
Individuals must provide a blood donor card, a driver's license, or two alternative forms of identification at the time of check-in.
Anyone over the age of 17 and weighing at least 110 pounds is eligible to donate during the blood drive.
