Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie recently held the third annual Sweet Corn Day event in Savanna. McCombie created the event to celebrate sweet corn and provide a day of family fun for Northwest Illinois residents. Over a hundred attendees participated, enjoying corn and various festivities.

Sweet Corn Day was initially suggested by a local constituent, leading McCombie to present a bill designating August 1st as Sweet Corn Appreciation Day in Illinois. The legislation passed unanimously in 2022. This year marked the third annual celebration, establishing it as a tradition for Leader McCombie and area residents throughout the 89th legislative district.

“Each year this event grows and I am thrilled that our community can keep coming together to celebrate sweet corn,” said McCombie, who is already looking forward to next year’s event on August 1, 2025.

Leader McCombie extended special thanks to the sponsors who contributed to this year's Sweet Corn Day: Miller Excavating (Ron & Lori Miller-Savanna), City of Savanna, Savanna Fire Department, WCCI, Neumiller Farms (Savanna), Selmi’s Farm Corn (Rock Falls), Meridian, Mike & Jen Sullivan, the Illinois Farm Bureau, and the Illinois Corn Growers Association.
