A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Savanna City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at NW Illinois News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the pursuit of transparency and accountability, we sought specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The information requested includes a list of all council members with specific details such as their names, titles, years appointed, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates.
As an organization committed to reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await a response from the Savanna City Council and will continue our efforts in ensuring that government operations remain transparent and accountable to the public.
