A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Sterling City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at NW Illinois News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability, we requested specific records pertaining to the city council members. The details sought include each member's name, title, year of appointment, term length (2 or 4 years), and the date their term expires.
As journalists, access to public records is vital for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the benefit of the public.
We have asked for these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of dissemination and analysis. In line with our role as a media organization disseminating information to the public, we have also requested a fee waiver for this service.
We believe that access to this information will contribute significantly towards enhancing public understanding of local government operations and promoting civic engagement within the community.
The Sterling City Council has yet to respond to our request.
