Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has proposed new legislation to support young women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This initiative aims to provide mentorships and scholarships to encourage female students in these fields.
The legislative package includes several bills. HB 2801 mandates the Illinois State Board of Education to create resources for K-12 STEM teachers, helping inform young women about externship and volunteer opportunities with local organizations. HB 2802 permits girls in STEM classes one school day absence per year for approved externships. HB 2806 expands the eligibility for the STEM higher education scholarship program to include women, alongside racial minorities.
"Opportunities for girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and math fields in Illinois are boundless," McCombie stated. "But we can do a much better job of connecting these students with every available resource they need to succeed."
Data from the National Science Foundation reveals that 39% of STEM graduates from Illinois universities were women in 2021—the highest percentage recorded—but McCombie believes there is room for growth. Her proposed legislation seeks to increase the number of young women graduating with STEM degrees by enhancing educational opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
"My legislation will help keep Illinois at the forefront of STEM education," said McCombie. "And give young women from every part of our state the opportunities they need to earn their degree and embark on a fulfilling career in fields critical to Illinois’ economy."
