Farmers and agricultural haulers in Illinois can now apply for a free Harvest Permit, which allows trucks to exceed legal weight limits by up to 10% during the harvest season, ending December 31. The permit is available through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) website at webapps.dot.illinois.gov/ITAP.

House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is urging those interested to consider applying for the permit. According to McCombie, “Farmers feed Illinois and this helps keep the harvest moving.”

Permit holders must carry updated route authorizations every 14 days. The permit applies only to state routes, not interstates or local roads unless local jurisdictions grant waivers.

McCombie, a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023, emphasized that the permit offers flexibility when hauling commodities, particularly when in-field loading may cause loads to slightly exceed legal limits.

More information about the program can be found on the ITAP – Home page.
